A Playful Approach to Learning for Ages 3 – 6
Writing Workshop for Parents
March 21st from 2-4 p.m.
I am offering a Writing Workshop for Parents who are interested in learning specific techniques to aid beginning readers. Together we’ll learn about Interactive Writing (sharing the pen), Guided Writing (student writes with assistance from you), and Independent Writing.
I will also demonstrate the procedures for:
* negotiating a story,
* using sound boxes to help children hear sounds in words,
* how and when to transition to letter boxes,
* how to teach letter formation,
* how to increase your child’s cadre of known words, and
* how to use known words to help children decode new words.
If time permits, we will do some advanced making and breaking techniques with magnetic letters.
Please let me know if you are interested in attending and if there is a specific question or topic you’d like me to cover.
The cost will be: $20 for one adult, $30 for a couple, and free for students who are registered in either the Readers’ Circle or Sibley Preschool.
Thanks for your help,
Rebecca
Cracking the Code: Reading Education 101 for Parents
Have you ever wondered how a child actually learns to read? Do you feel like your child is struggling a bit too much with cracking the reading code? Have you ever wished you could take a crash course in how to teach reading, since so many other subjects require this skill?
You’re not alone! Many of the homeschooling parents I work with have had these same questions and concerns about teaching reading. Just because you know how to read doesn’t mean you know how to TEACH reading — they are two different skills. Not to mention that each individual brings his or her own strengths to the reading table, so teaching one student is likely to be quite different than teaching another!
I have designed a unique course to benefit ALL parents that combines relevant reading theory with practical teaching techniques. This workshop has two components. First, we will review current reading research on how children learn to read and discuss 3 easy ways we can scaffold reading development. Second, we will make our own learning manipulatives to use with our children as well as receive a demonstration on how to present these learning tasks in a clear, concise manner.
The cost for the workshop is $20 (but free for parents of currently registered students at Sibley Learning Center).
If you’d like to join us, please leave a comment below in regards to your scheduling availability. Depending on interest, we will meet on Saturday November 15th or 22nd from 1:00 – 3:00 at the Sibley Learning Center.

P.S. Normally, everything here is very family-friendly. But this workshop is for parents only, as I won’t have any childcare available (this helps keep the cost lower for everyone). If a parenting couple would like to attend the same workshop but share one set of materials, then the couples’ cost would only be $30. Thanks again for your interest. I’m going to be giving you lots of articles as well as hands-on ideas to use right away!
